13th Sun Festival 5k Run & 1 Mile Walk

Congratulations to all of todays finishers at the 13th Sundance 5k Run in Rehoboth Beach.   Special thanks to all the Sponsors & Volunteers, Chris & his Camp Rehoboth team, Organizer Roxy & her team & the Seashore Strider team.   It takes a total "team" effort to pull off an event.

Side Note:  This happened at the JJ Run with the Overall Female and it happened again today with another Overall Title.   I explained it at the JJ awards ceremony and I will explain it again today.   I have also spoke today with very reliable sources in Ed from Nova Timing, Wayne from Races2Run, Nic & Craig from Fusion and a rep for USATF.   It was consistent with everyone I spoke to...The Overall (Overall 1st person across the line for both male & female) and the Masters (1st 40+ year old to cross the line for both male & female) is based on "GUN".  Meaning that the Overall & Masters will be the first person to cross the line.   This eliminates a runner winning the race without being first across the line.   Example...A female runner waiting in a portable toilet years ago for 10 minutes and let the crowd of 3000 thinout and then jumped on the course and ran (without dodging or weaving) and turned in the fastest chip time finishing in the middle of the pack.   We had everything setup by chip so we had no idea it happened and presented her the Overall Championship.   It was not until I went back to video and pictures that I discovered what happened and it was corrected the following year. 

Soon after "Chip" became a reality, several timers including myself realized this could happen and that is why most timers in the US use "Gun" for Overall & "Chip" for age group.   I have been in this business for 31 years and I will remain consistent to what is done all over the country.

Most runners in my races, I would say over 75%, are running for the social, health or charity aspect of the event and 25% are competitive.  What I tell runners all the time is if you are a contender for an Overall, Masters or Age Group Championship then you need to be in the 1st third of the race at the start so that your gun & chip are fairly close and if you decide to start in the back or delay your start then you may jeopardize your chance at a championship.  In closing, I spoke to the two great runners this evening and explained the policy and we are all on the same page.  I thank them both for letting me explain and I thank you all for listening....Race Director Tim- Seashore Striders
