36th Seashore 5 Mile Run (SSRS EVENT #10)

Sunday, July 15, 2018 - 7:30am

QUALIFIER: Last chance for a 5 Mile qualifier for summer series participation.

Event #10 of the Seashore Strider Championship Series

RACE NOTE...THE SEASHORE STRIDERS MADE A CHANGE TO THE COURSE LAST YEAR FOR A FEW REASONS...THE RUNNERS LOVED THE NEW COURSE SO WE ARE GOING TO RACE THE SAME COURSE AGAIN.   HERE IS A STATEMENT I PUBLISHED LAST YEAR REGARDING THE CHANGE.

HENLOPEN ACRES IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO RUN, BUT THERE ARE SOME RACE DIRECTOR PRO'S & CON'S THAT NO ONE BUT A RACE DIRECTOR WOULD UNDERSTAND...INCREASED TRAFFIC ON THE COURSE(CARS, BIKES, WALKERS) AND HAVING TO PLACE VOLUNTEERS AT EACH INTERSECTION/TURN, USE SECURITY ON COURSE ARE SOME OF THE ITEMS THAT ARE NEEDED IN THE ACRES.   THE OTHER CONCERN IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE COURSE EXITS THE ACRES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF OCEAN DRIVE WHEN THEY ARE AGAINST TRAFFIC WITH A SMALL SHOULDER THAT IS NOT WIDE ENOUGH.   IT BECOMES A SAFETY CONCERN WITH BIKES AND TRAFFIC HEADING RIGHT TOWARDS OUR RUNNERS OF THE LEFT HEADING NORTH.

SO THIS YEAR WE ARE GOING TO LEAVE DEAUVILLE BEACH AND HEAD NORTH RIGHT INTO THE STATE PARK, LOOP THE PARKING LOT ON THE SIDEWALK, AND JUMP ON THE GORDON'S POND TRAIL TURNING AROUND AT THE 2.5 MILE MARK OF THE RACE AND RETURNING THE SAME WAY.   THE ADVANTAGE OF THIS COURSE IS THAT WE ARE WILL BE WITH TRAFFIC WHEN WE ARE BUNCHED UP AT THE BEGINNING, THERE ARE 3 SPRAYS ON THE WAY OUT AND ON THE WAY BACK ON OCEAN DRIVE FOR WATER SAFETY, I CAN DO 2 MORE WATER STOPS (ONE IN THE PARKING LOT & ONE AT THE TURN-A-ROUND), AND ON THE RETURN THE RUNNERS HAVE ROOM AS THEY ARE IN SINGLE FILE FOR THE MOST PART.

THIS DECISION IS IN NO MEANS BECAUSE OF ANYTHING THAT HENLOPEN ACRES HAS DONE, WE HAD BEEN GRANTED APPROVAL, AND CITY MGR TOM IS ALWAYS GREAT TO WORK WITH.   IT IS SIMPLY A "WORK SMARTER-NOT HARDER" REASON AND I WANT TO GIVE IT A TRY THIS YEAR.

THE NEW COURSE WILL SIMPLY BE EASY AND DEFINATELY "THE FASTEST 5 MILE COURSE" IN THE STATE WITH VERY LIMITED TURNS THROUGH THE WHOLE COURSE.  IT IS ALSO A BEAUTIFUL TRAIL THAT IS A PART OF OUR SEASHORE MARATHON, SEASHORE HALF, AND HERRING POINT COURSES.

I THANK PAT COOPER & HIS STAFF FOR WORKING WITH ME AND I THANK MY RUNNERS LIKE YOU FOR BEING COOPERATIVE IN MY DECISION AND PLEASE KNOW THAT MY DECISIONS (LIKE THE ONE AT 7:28 AM AT JUNGLE JIM'S) ARE ALWAYS FOR THE BEST INTEREST OF MY RUNNERS AND SAFETY IS ALWAYS MY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.

THANK YOU

RACE DIRECTOR TIM- SEASHORE STRIDERS
