12th Annual Race for the Ribbon

In Memory of Nancy L. Hendershot

In Honor of Jackeline Olivas-Marin & Miguel Robledo-Mendez

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

At the start of each new year, the search begins to find a local child in need of our help. This year, fortunately and unfortunately, we

found not one, but two Cape Henlopen High School students. Jacky and Miguel are at different points of their cancer journeys, but they

both are remarkably courageous kids who need our support. Ironically, this disease has created a connection between the two that

otherwise may not have been created at all.

Miguel Robledo-Mendez is a freshman at Cape Henlopen High School. Miguel is a member of the JROTC and

plays the clarinet in the band. In his free time, he enjoys building with Legos like many other boys his age. He

has two younger brothers, 9 and 7, and lives in Milton with his mom and step-dad. In November of 2018,

Miguel was diagnosed with Leukemia and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments at AI DuPont Hospital.

He typically spends a few days at the hospital and travels back home for a short while before having to repeat

the plan again the following week. Because of his treatment schedule, he has not been able to attend school

since his diagnosis in October.

Jackeline Olivas-Marin, a sophomore at Cape Henlopen High School, is thankfully at

the latter stage of her journey. Jacky was diagnosed with Lymphoma last school

year and after undergoing intensive chemotherapy for 6 months, Jacky is happy to

report that she is now in remission. While she has much reason to celebrate, she continues to have monthly

check-ups at AI DuPont Children’s Hospital. In her free time, Jacky enjoys editing videos and photos,

running, drawing, and spending quality time with her friends and family. I’ve heard from my H.O.

Brittingham Elementary colleagues that Jacky was an outstanding student who worked very hard and always

demonstrated caring and compassion for others.

It is no surprise that Jacky also finds time to reach out to and encourage Miguel and his mom.

Since the Race for the Ribbon began in 2008, the purpose of our event has been two-fold, to commemorate my mom, Nancy, who lost

her fight with cancer and also to raise awareness and funds for those afflicted with this disease. While a portion of the money raised will

be donated to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, the majority of the funds will be donated to our beneficiaries mentioned

above. Both families have been financially burdened by this disease and could use assistance to help defray their medical and travel

expenses. To date, our event has raised around $150,000 and I hope and pray to continue helping others coping with this life altering

illness.

This year’s 5K fundraising event will be held on Saturday, July 13th, starting and finishing on the corner of Wilmington Avenue and the

Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach. Once again, The Greene Turtle has generously offered to host our post-race party, which will include a

breakfast buffet, music, and awards. The race is part of the “Summer Racing Series” for the Seashore Striders. All participants will

receive a race t-shirt listing all gold, silver, and bronze level sponsors on the back and platinum level sponsors on the front.

On behalf of the Robledo-Mendez and Olivas-Marin families, the American Cancer Society, and the Race for the Ribbon fundraising

team, I am writing to request your support in the form of a tax-deductible donation. Enclosed is a sponsor form providing you with the

opportunity to sponsor the Race for the Ribbon. Descriptions of the sponsor levels and sponsor recognition are explained as well.

Feel free to share this information with friends, colleagues, and family members who may want to contribute. If interested in donating to

this very special event, please return the enclosed form and contribution by Wednesday, July 3, 2019. If you have any questions, please

feel free to contact me at (302) 242-7048 or [email protected] .

I look forward to hearing from you and I thank you for your consideration.

Most Sincerely,

Stephanie Shuttleworth
