"Running & Racing at the Beach"

*postponed* Run to the Plunge has been postponed to Saturday March 13th, 2010

UPDATE Thursday 2-4-2010

We regret to announce that the 2010 Lewes Polar Bear Plunge Festival, and all elements of it, has been postponed to March 12-14 due to the projected nor’easter and accompanying snow, high winds and rough surf.

The decision was made first and foremost with the safety of our Bears, volunteers and spectators in mind.

The decision was made with input from the event safety team, which is comprised of representatives from the Delaware State Police, the City of Rehoboth Police & Fire Department and the Sussex County Emergency Response.

All Plunge Weekend Festival event times remain the same with one exception: the Run to the Plunge will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 13.

UPDATE Wednesday 2-3-2010

Dear Run to the Plunge Participants,

We understand there is potential for a serious storm to hit Delaware and the beaches this weekend.  I want to let you how we are addressing this situation.

Our safety team (comprised of Rehoboth Beach Police & Fire, Sussex County Emergency Response, Delaware State Police Divers and DelDOT) will be meeting via conference call this Thursday morning, Feb. 4, and will be utilizing the most up-to-date and reliable forecasts available at that time to assess the situation.

Should a decision be made to cancel any or all of the weekend activities (including the Run to the Plunge), it will be announced, along with the re-scheduled date, by 12 NOON on Thursday. We will update the website, www.plungede.org, and also send an e-mail out to all registered run participants and Bears who provided us with one.

The current report from NOAA is calling for 12-plus inches of snow on Saturday. The City of Rehoboth is still trying to come out from under this past weekend’s snowfall — snow in parking spaces and on the boardwalk — and those issues will be significant factors in the decision we make. In the meantime, if you have any questions that are not weather or contingency-plan related, please e-mail sode@sode.org.

Thanks for your patience as we strive to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the event.
